The prevention of Obesity is paramount, especially when dealing with a DS-diagnosed patient. While DS-diagnosed infants are typically born underweight, the baby will become obese by age 4 if she/he is not put on “a lifelong regimen to monitor growth and prevent obesity…at 24 months of age” (Roizen & Patterson 2003, p. 1283). However, there are also specialized growth charts that pediatricians can use to monitor the baby's development before then, to make sure that he/she is not overweight.
